Maddocks Begins Another Bid For More Glory

1989 Champion Col Maddocks is one of the highest profile players of the forty-four beginning the journey towards immortality in the preliminary round of the Champion of Champions on Sunday, 17th September.

The annual charity event is raising money for MacMillan Cancer Support this year with an admirable total raised by the players standing at £751.49 before a dart has even been thrown.

Maddocks is joined by 1996 winner Ralph Lancaster at the Indian Inn in what looks like a potential banana skin venue for many of the players on show with an open draw being performed on the night.

Cornwall county players Lee Hellings and Andrew Cook, as well as Devon's Dave Matthews, could potentially be paired with the former title holders, as well as each other, during this preliminary stage.

2018 Champion Neil White will begin his quest for a second crown at the Fawn alongside five former Devon teammates, both old and new.

Kieran Burns, Fred Goldsmith, Danny Bull, Danny Allen and Mark Shears complete that quintet alongside Goldsmith's Cornwall stablemates Scott Wapshott and Scott Cook who are also looking for a tilt at the title.

Waiting for the winners in the next round are current reigning and defending, three times champion John Mann and runner-up from last year Harry Bull who have received byes.

Another who will have to wait for his first outing in this year's tournament is five time winner Simon Stevenson who hold the record jointly with the great Flynn Jones for most victories.

Eleven ties over the best of five legs and 501 distance will take place at each venue after a draw being done at 7pm sharp to determine who plays whom before play commences shortly afterwards.

Players are not required to be in attendance for the draw but must be ready to play from shortly afterwards when play will commence.

Winners will book their place in the exciting Last 64/32 stage on 22nd October, in which players will need to win through two matches to book their place amongst the elite on Finals Night played on 12th November.
