Big Fish Caught In First Super League Week

The highest checkout of the season can only be matched rather than beaten after week one of the Plymouth City Super League Division A saw Lee Hellings net himself a 170 finish in an 11-0 win for Octagon at Ker St.

Hellings bagged that effort in a 601 doubles win that also saw Hellings and Alfie Ford hear 'game shot' called after 21 darts and Hellings (33.40) followed that with a 3-0 singles win that was put away in 13, 15 and 17 darts.

One of those aforementioned individual legs fell with a 124 three dart combination finish whilst Hellings tally of fifteen tons was topped off by one of the two maximums in the game.

The other decent average came in the very first game of the night as John Mann teamed up with Fred Goldsmith and Alfie Ford (30.33) to bag a 33 darter over the 1001 distance.

That game started a twelve ton haul for Mann whilst new addition to the champions' roster, Paul Palmer, started his campaign with ten scores of a ton or more.

On a tough night for the promoted Devonport side, Roger Bailey cast a torch on the class in their ranks with a maximum and an 18 dart leg in a 3-1 singles defeat whilst a 104 from Mike Evans was home team's best finish.

Cornwall Gate, who came up as the first champions of Division B, started life in the top tier with an admirable 7-4 win over an Indian Inn B side formed of the majority of the Legends Lounge that were Division A runners-up.

Simon Stevenson dominated the matchup with eighteen scores of a ton or more; a haul that included one of the four maximums in the match.

Shaun Dring showed his undoubted class with fifteen three figure scores and teammate Matt Vosper chipped in with eleven tons including his team's other maximum.

Dring's 108 three dart combination out shot was sonly bettered by a 122 from Vosper whilst two men from the visitors also reached double figures in tons.

Scott Cook led the way with eleven ton plusses with Mark Shears added ten tons and the Stoke village side's only maximums came from Scott Wapshott with a brace.

The best leg of 501 also came from the arm of a visiting marksman as Paul Gavican was a 3-0 winner with an 18 dart leg his best.

A single visit combo of 120 by Gavican's stablemate Dan Brazier gave him the highest checkout honours amongst his peers who will need to start picking up points if they're going to mount a serious title challenge.

Kings Arms B might've started the season with a narrow 6-5 defeat to Cherry Tree C, but Tony Gordon certainly contributed to the affair with fifteen ton plusses in the loss.

In a tightly fought contest, the quartet 180s were shared equally between the two teams as Gordon and teammate Dave Johns fired for the home side.

Frankie Stout topped off his eleven ton tally with a maximum for the victorious team to join Darren Smith in achieving a three treble visit.

Stout's ton total was only bettered for the visitors by Dan Jewell who bagged himself thirteen three figure scores whilst Dave Hollow added ten tons overall.

At the business end of legs, notable checkouts of 75 and 61 came from Martyn Down and Steve Towl respectively to take the high checkout honours for each side.

After the Cherry Tree team built a 5-2 lead, Johns was a 3-2 winner over Jewell thanks in part to a 17 darter before Gordon forced the game to 5-5 thanks to his leg in 18 during a 3-2 win over Stout.

However, Captain Nathan Langdon steered his team home with an accomplished 3-0 win to give us Pennycross team a deserved win after leading 3-1 and 5-2 in the game.

Bluebird A made a fabulous start to the new campaign with a a 10-1 derby day win over the Bluebird Bandits that was dominated by the form of Glenn Halford who plundered fourteen ton plusses.

Halford netted the highest checkout of the match in the batch with a 113 kill and also added one of the two maximums in the game.

New signing Dale Halford, who cross the Bluebird divide from B to A in the closed season, added the second on debut against his old team.

James Stoodley's 3-1 win and a 3-0 success for Lee Roberts had one thing in common; an 18 dart leg from each competitor on their way to their respective successes.

An entertaining 6-5 win for Cherry Tree A over newcomers to Division A Clifton was led by Steve Mills ton plus total of eleven.

Wayne Town's 66 checkout narrowly bettered a 60 by Mills for the biggest checkout of the match whilst Town ended his night on ten tons for the defeated visitors.

The lead changed hands five times before James Hughes became the home team's hero with a 3-0 singles win that came with the scores tied at 5-5.
